Jed Ela, Derrick Adams
Momenta Art 2006-02-01 Money may not be able to buy you love, but it does have the intrinsic ability to “buy” ones attention. Hefty little bundles of cash, neatly folded and bound, sit on a shelf within a black frame. A wide-mouthed glass jug catches bills and spare change. “Donations money deposited will remain herein till the end of time” is etched on its front. Today money and art seem inseparable, Ela’s choice of money as an art material invokes conflicts of value, markets and their conceptual morphology over time. Derrick Adams delivers us to a personal world of pre-adolescent anxiety. Performing at the opening he lounged motionlessly, shrouded in Raggedy Andy jammies, under a striped quilt festooned with all-day suckers. Nearby a fuzzy white critter sits on a potty, its head replaced with a cascade of plastic produce, engendering a Technicolor detox from a Froot Loops OD. James Kalm |
